The Spring Cup is the oldest of the four Men’s Majors at Nedlands Golf Club and the 36 Hole Stableford event dates all the way back to 1935.  This year the event was made possible by generous sponsorship from “The Gallery” a group of Nedlands’ members who are regulars in the Men’s competitions and the upstairs’ bar.

There were superb scores this year and despite some rough weather conditions on the Friday preceding the event, the course was presented beautifully and conditions were ideal. The scoring on the first day reflected this with great scores including 44 Stableford points from Ron Birmingham and 43 points from Ian Mumford. Campbell Thomson also played some great golf with a 41 point finish in the afternoon of the first day. Other good scores on the first day included 39 from new member Adam Wang, Greg Polla (39 points), Brian Hanna (38), Hugo McChesney (38) and Tony Slee (38).

After such fantastic scoring on the first day, it was clear that the winner would need to post another solid score to take home the trophy and that simply playing to the handicap over 2 days would not be enough (74 points). This was proven to be true as on the second day there were 5 scores over 40 points! Member Tim Song proved that golf can be a fickle game, after scoring a measly 23 points on day 1, Tim turned this around with a 43 point second day. Representing a 20 Stableford point swing, what a difference a day can make in golf! Other great scores included Tony Cowan (42) which combined for 74 and third overall for both days, Simon Smith (40) and Andy Lemesurier (40) and Bryan Gardiner (38).

One of the top picks after the first day, Campbell Thomson again played outstanding and followed his 41 point round with a solid round of 36 points to combine for 77 points across 36 holes. This was a very competitive score and surely this would be enough to take home the major and many were calling the victory early. However, as most groups had put their score card in and were heading up to the bar and settling in for a well deserved drink, a late scorecard entry from the final group to finish proved a major upset. Dark horse Mackenzie Buck, whose 37 point first round didn’t even get a mention on the first day, played very well to card a 40 point round on the second day, combining for 77 points. This was enough to edge out Campbell Thomson on a countback and hand Mackenzie a maiden major victory.
