The Summer Cup is a major 36 hole men’s event which dates back to 1949 and the trophy was originally donated by the Trevor Rodda Family as a Memorial Trophy to recognize the involvement of the Rodda Family at the club during the 1950s-1970s. The sponsor for this year’s event was member Phil Johnson and his business Phil Johnson Plumbing and Gas. Phil has been a continued sponsor of this event for many years and we are very grateful to Phil for his generosity in making this event possible.

For the Summer Cup this year the weather conditions were fantastic and the course was presented beautifully.  This was reflected in good scores on Saturday morning by Callum White of +3, Wayne Trumble +2 and Ian Mumford +2. In the afternoon the wind blew stronger and good scores were a little rarer, but Stewart Wharton defied this and posted a great score of +3 and Paul Baster played well to shoot +2.

In contrast to previous major events, the scores were more honest and on the second day it was clear that those who shot a great score on Saturday had a very good chance to take home the trophy if they could play to their handicap again on Sunday. Morning players again led the charge with Matt Dumble, Harry Traylen and Brian Stuart all posting +2.

On Sunday afternoon as the majority of the field hit off with good scores in the system from the morning, overnight co-leader Stewart Wharton must have been feeling the pressure. In the afternoon, only 5 players played better than their handicap including Matt King +3, Don O’Brien +2, Paul Jenkins +1, Craig Nelson +1 and James Smith +1. Unfortunately for Vice-Captain Stewart, he was not one of them and he was not able to claim his maiden major victory.

Callum White who played great golf on the first day, followed his +3 with another +3 to combine for +6 over 36 holes of golf. Well done to Callum for playing some fantastic golf as a single marker.
