The Wittenoom Cup Carnival is eight days of Golf events played at Albany Golf Club and leads into the Wittenoom Cup and Brenda Wittenoom Open which this year was played on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of January. One hundred and forty-nine (149) men representing 40 clubs and eighty-eight (88) women representing 27 clubs set out in their quest for victory. As has happened in previous years, apart from the Home Club, Nedlands representation was greater than any other club with 16 men and 9 women competing. Over the course of the nine day carnival around 30 Nedlands players played in a selection of events.

Albany Golf Club is a links golf course established in 1898 as a Nine Hole Course and became an Eighteen Hole Course in 1963 when it was officially opened by Charles Wittenoom a past President and Patron of the club. In 2010 it was listed in the state’s list of Heritage Places.

In 1927 Charles Wittenoom donated a silver trophy to the club and this became the Wittenoom Cup and from that year on was played as a 36 Hole Stroke Event – as was his wish.

2003 saw the introduction of the Brenda Wittenoom Open (Brenda being the daughter in law of Charles) an event played for ladies in conjunction with the Wittenoom Cup.

Brenda Wittenoom Open

Vanessa Stephen was the defending Champion of the Brenda Wittenoom Open and Cath Bellemore won in 2020. Unfortunately, neither could win their second championship but Cath won the best Gross over the 36 holes after being the runner up in 2021. Congratulations Cath.

Rhonda Moore finished equal second two shots from the winner with a 36-hole nett score of 145 – an excellent second round of 69 was the highlight. Well done Rhonda.

Mandy Sudlow-Brown finished equal 8th with a nett score of 148 and Nikki Wehr was one stroke further back on 149.

Well done ladies.

Wittenoom Cup

With the men in the Wittenoom Cup, it was a different story as there were no players in the top 15. Perhaps the social life in Albany interfered with their preparations.

Gary Hing was the best with 152.

Highlights

Jeff Veling won the Wednesday Men’s Stableford Competition with 41 points.

Krystyna Knottnerus finished equal first in the Women’s Stableford Competition on the same day with 41 points but lost on a countback.

Undoubtedly the major highlight of the week was the IRISH MIXED 4 BALL STABLEFORD event on Friday. The event was won by Tony Cowan, Krystyna Knottnerus, Steven Noske and Patricia Noske with 95 points.

Footnote – An Irish Event won by a Scot, and three people who have heritages from Brunei, Russia and Poland????

NOTE – These results have been taken from the information provided by Albany Golf Club which may not include all the novelty winners. From the information provided top 10 finishes have been included. Apologies if the Nedlands Results are not all included.

Congratulations once again to Albany Golf Club for presenting a course in excellent condition and for their organisation of the carnival of golf. The weather was also a contributing factor to the enjoyment of the week.

Finally, to the members of Nedlands Golf Club congratulations to you for your support of the week of golf. I am sure you will all look forward to the 2023 Carnival of Golf in Albany.
