Tony Cowan, Krystyna Knottnerus, Mandy Sudlow-Brown, John Mitchell and Joe Alexander.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Fifty Eighth playing of the DALKEITH CUP,<\/strong> a mixed four ball combined stableford event, took place on a \u201cbeautiful Scottish Summer\u2019s Day!!\u201d on Sunday October 1 with a field of twenty four pairs setting out on their quest to become the Mixed Four Ball Champions. Krystyna Knottnerus<\/strong> and Tony Cowan<\/strong> continued their sponsorship of the Cup and their ongoing support is appreciated by all.<\/p>\n

The event was named after our neighbouring suburb of Dalkeith.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suburb of Dalkeith derives its name from an estate of 320 acres taken up in 1831 by\u00a0Adam Armstrong<\/u>. He named it Dalkeith Farm after the district near Edinburgh from which he had migrated in 1829\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s field included six past winning combinations \u2013 Cath Bellemore <\/strong>and Paul Baster (2009), Patricia <\/strong>and Steve Noske (2013), Veni Tang <\/strong>and Gary Hing (2015), Marg Doyle <\/strong>and Joe Alexander (2018 and 2019), Nikki <\/strong>and Fred Wehr<\/strong> (2020)<\/strong> and the champions from the last two years Carolyn Browne <\/strong>and Mackenzie Buck <\/strong>who were looking for a \u201cthree-peat\u201d.<\/p>\n

The defending champions Carolyn Browne<\/strong> and Mackenzie Buck<\/strong> did not play up to expectations and the remainder of the Past Champions finished in second to sixth positions \u2013 an excellent effort<\/p>\n

Apart from the defending champions and past winners of the trophy ones to watch were the sponsors, Krystyna Knottnerus<\/strong> and Tony Cowan, Mandy Sudlow-Brown <\/strong>and John Mitchell, Ali Baker <\/strong>and Scott van Heurck<\/strong>, Rhonda Moore<\/strong> and Marty Morris <\/strong>and Chris <\/strong>and Stewart Wharton.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Leader Board after 15 holes looked something like this-;<\/p>\n

55 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Krystyna Knottnerus (23) and Tony Cowan (21)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

53 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Patricia Noske (22) and Steve Noske (7) – Jane Waters (45) and Stuart Waters (8)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

52 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nikki Wehr (29) and Fred Wehr (26) \u2013 Chris Wharton (27) and Stewart Wharton (8)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

So, it looked as though the \u201cDouble Champions\u201d, Marg Doyle and Joe Alexander<\/strong> were an excellent chance of making it three titles \u2013 but as we know golf is a funny game and, in this case, the last three holes proved crucial to the outcome<\/p>\n

The leaders could only amass 4 points on the 16th<\/sup> and 17th<\/sup> and were now desperately hanging on to their lead with 3 others now in contention.<\/p>\n

With one hole left things had changed \u2013 the semmingly unassailable lead had become only one point and it was still a very close run thing with four pairings within 3 points<\/p>\n

67 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Marg Doyle (20) and Joe Alexander (15)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

66 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mandy Sudlow\u2013Brown(23) and John Mitchell (22)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

65 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Veni Tang (21) and Gary Hing (9)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

64 points\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cath Bellemore (7) and Paul Baster (13)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Once again Marg and Joe could only manage 2 points on their last hole (the 18th<\/sup>) and now had to sit and wait for the others to finish.<\/p>\n

Cath and Paul could only have 3 points on their last hole \u2013 the 1st<\/sup>, as did Veni and Gary on the 5th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Mandy and John both had 2 points on their final hole, the 2nd,<\/sup> and overtook the two-time champs and with 14 points over their last 3 holes against Marg and Joe\u2019s 6 points the trophy was theirs.<\/p>\n

A remarkable comeback but you have to feel for Marg and Joe \u2013 what could have been.<\/p>\n

Congratulations to our 2023 Dalkeith Cup Winners Mandy Sudlow-Brown and John Mitchell<\/strong> and once again we acknowledge the ongoing support of the club made by Krystyna Knottnerus <\/strong>and Tony Cowan.<\/strong><\/p>\n
