The Fifty Ninth playing of the DALKEITH CUP<\/strong>, a mixed four ball combined stableford event, took place on a beautiful Spring Day on Sunday September 29 with a disappointing field of 17 pairs setting out on their quest to become the Mixed Four Ball Champions. Krystyna Knottnerus<\/strong> and Tony Cowan<\/strong> once again sponsored this year\u2019s event and whilst it was a small field it certainly contained class. Perhaps it was a case of a Grand Final hangover that caused the low entries.<\/p>\n

The event was named after our neighbouring suburb of Dalkeith.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suburb of Dalkeith derives its name from an estate of 320 acres taken up in 1831 by Adam Armstrong<\/u>. He named it Dalkeith Farm after the district near Edinburgh from which he had migrated in 1829\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

There were no past winning combinations in the field this year but there were a number of past winning individuals in the field \u2013 Grace<\/strong> and Gavin Furness<\/strong> who won in 2007 but for some reason weren\u2019t paired together this year and Honor Metcalf<\/strong> and Don O\u2019Brien (2014), Cath Bellemore (2009), Patricia Noske (2013), Joe Alexander (2018 and 2019) <\/strong>and John Mitchell (2023)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Leader Board after 15 holes looked something like this-;<\/p>\n

61 points         Susie Rich (23) and Gavin Furness (9)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

59 points         Yolande Caruso (29) and Vince Caruso (24)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

56 points         Joan Brown (22) and Joe Alexander (14), Helen Walsh (31) and Bevan Lawrence (15)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

55 points         <\/em><\/strong>Patricia Noske (20) and Tim Tan (6)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

So, it looked as though Susie Rich<\/strong> and Gavin Furness<\/strong> had it in the bag but as we all know strange things happen \u2013 just like last year.<\/p>\n

And as it turned out the leaders stayed where they were after having 13 points over their last 3 holes to finish with 74 points. \u2013 Susie had 36 points and Gavin 38 points.<\/p>\n

There was a race on for second and this went to Joan Brown<\/strong> and Joe Alexander<\/strong> who finished fast with 15 points over their final 3 holes for a total of 71 points and 3 adrift of the winners.<\/p>\n

Patricia Noske <\/strong>and Tim Tan<\/strong> moved up to third with 13 points over the last 3 holes and a total of 68 points,<\/p>\n

The Caruso<\/strong> combination did not fare well over the concluding 3 holes and dropped back to 4th<\/sup> position with 68 points \u2013 Yolande had 39 of those.<\/p>\n

Helen Walsh<\/strong> and Bevan Lawrence <\/strong>were next on 67 points and had 12 points over their last 3 holes.<\/p>\n

There is not a great deal more one can say except congratulations to the Champions<\/p>\n

So now to the Final Leader Board –<\/p>\n

68 points         Yolande Caruso (29) and Vince Caruso (24)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

67 points         Helen Walsh (31) and Bevan Lawrence (15)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

65 points         Honor Metcalf (27) and Tim Bryant (14)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
