After postponing the CG Dudley Cup<\/strong> for a week due to a less than favorable weather forecast, the most prestigious event on the Men\u2019s Calendar, was played over 36 Holes of Stroke Play over the weekend of August 16 and 17. SHAW and PARTNERS<\/strong> continued their sponsorship of the Dudley and Club Championship and our thanks go to Stuart Beattie<\/strong> and Mark Palmer<\/strong>. Our appreciation is extended to Stuart and Mark for their ongoing support of the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2025 marks the 75th<\/sup> playing of \u201cTHE<\/strong> DUDLEY<\/strong>\u201d, and a field of 101 players started on Saturday in their journey to be crowned champion on Sunday evening and to qualify for the Club Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a little bit of history about the man after which the trophy is named, for those who do not already know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CYRIL DUDLEY <\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong>President for 27 years (1932-1950 and 1955-1962)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1933 he was made a Life Member and in 1963 \u201cPresident Emeritus\u201d which literally means \u201cone who has retired with honour\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1975 he was awarded a C.B.E.by the Queen for services to Real Estate, Sport, Politics and Community Service.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family<\/em><\/strong>–<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His wife Pam<\/strong> was a Founding Member and Life Member.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Dudley,<\/em><\/strong> one of his six children, was a member of the first winning \u201cA\u201d Grade Pennant team in 1960. Son John was also a member and handy golfer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyril himself played on a handicap as low as 6 and was a member of a winning \u201cB\u201d Grade team.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His daughter, Anne<\/strong>, married Herb Elliott <\/strong>in 1959.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President of WA Golf Association<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President of Subiaco Football Club<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President of the Real Estate Institute – both the state and national bodies<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life Member Real Estate Institute of Australia<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Involved in organizational committee for the 1962 Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past champions in the field included triple Champion and defending Champion, David Falconer (1976, 2003 and 2024), Timothy Tan (2009), Brian Stuart (2017), and Luke Bai (2023).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ROUND ONE<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather over the 2 days was best defined as fine and benign so scoring should have been good \u2013 but you have to appreciate that \u201cThe Curse of The Dudley\u201c would have an effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Samuels (6 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> was looking to make amends from 2024 when he finished 5th<\/sup> and played very well in the morning to be the overall leader with a Nett 69 \u2013 leading Gross and Leading the over 55\u2019s. Looks like he might be in for a big pay day come Sunday (Will more than likely get a couple of nearest the pins as well!!!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then followed Sponsor Stuart Beattie (19 H\u2019Cap).<\/strong> whose net 70 was excellent and whilst the 14th<\/sup> and 15th<\/sup> set him back, he rallied with a birdie and two pars over the final 3 holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pennant Player John McKay (7 H\u2019Cap), <\/strong>starting from the 6th<\/sup>,<\/strong> played well for his even par 72 which was somewhat spoilt by bogeys on 3 of his final 4 holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next was Don O\u2019Brien (14 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> with one over 73. After starting with a double bogey and then a further double and triple on his first 9 he turned for home with 3 shots left. He kept on going and a further double did not deter him, finishing with 3 pars on the last 3 holes \u2013 a great comeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gary Hing (11H\u2019Cap), David Morey (19 H\u2019Cap) and Ollie Wright (13 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> were also on 73.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The afternoon field did not fare any better with Andy Byk (22 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> and Craig Marshall (26 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> also carding 73\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Defending Champion, David Falconer (5 H\u2019Cap) <\/strong>had a day to forget and was well out of contention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Best Gross belonged to John Samuels <\/strong>with four over par 76. Edmund Hall and John McKay<\/strong> were back on 79.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201cover 55\u2019s\u201d John Samuels<\/strong> with 76 led from Gavin Parker<\/strong> on 81<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EDITOR\u2019S FOOTNOTE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The marquis group of Watkins, Furness, van Heurck and Frazer <\/strong>had a day to forget. In no particular order they finished the day in 53rd, 86th<\/sup>, 93rd<\/sup> and 94th<\/sup> position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ROUND TWO<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, a beautiful Autumn Day greeted the players, so could the scoring improve \u2013 time would tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could this be the year for John Samuels<\/strong>? We said the same thing last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let\u2019s start our round up of Day 2 with the overnight leaders playing in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now what was John Samuels (6 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> doing? He was going extremely well over his first 13 holes (2 over par) and then a double bogey on 14. Could this be the curse setting in? A par on 15 followed by 3 bogeys saw him card a one over par 73 and a total of 142.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stuart Beattie <\/strong>had a day to forget \u2013 just like the Stock Market crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John McKay (7H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> was giving John Samuels a run for his money and with 3 holes left to play he was 2 over the card and in the lead \u2013 2 double bogeys and a bogey to finish undid all his good work and he finished with another 72 for a total of 144.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five shots back were Peter Miller (7 H\u2019Cap) <\/strong>and Don O\u2019Brien (14 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the one overs on dayone Gary Hing<\/strong> started well but fell back after two double bogeys and a quadruple on hole 12, 13 and 14. Ollie Wright<\/strong> threw away any chance he had with a front nine of 47, whilst David Morey<\/strong> could not keep the bogeys off his card and like Stuart Beattie had a day to forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has to be said that a less than favorable Pin Position on the 5th<\/sup> brought about considerable angst and the \u201cpin placer\u201d apologizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, after the morning round the overall leader was John Samuels (6 H\u2019Cap<\/strong>) on 142 followed by John McKay (7 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> and then daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now to the afternoon round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not much was happening with the afternoon field however a couple of players caught the eye<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Byk (22 H\u2019Cap) <\/strong>after a one over par round on day one was looking good after 10 holes – 13 shots left on his handicap. A Double Bogey on the 11th<\/sup> followed by a triple on 12 upset his momentum and he finished with net 74 and overall 147. An excellent effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craig Marshall (26 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> after his first round 73 started with par but then things went slightly awry with triples and doubles scattered over his front nine \u2013 final score 79 and total 154. He is now looking forward to the Match Play after qualifying first in \u201cC\u201d Grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody else was making up ground and it was left to the President, Damon Watkins (13 H\u2019Cap)<\/strong> to come up with the best score of the day \u2013 net 71 which elevated his overall position by around 60 positions. Good comeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There really is not much more to say apart from a couple of observations-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former President had 5 putts on the 6th<\/sup> hole which included two double hits in the old rules he would actually have had a total of 7 putts!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course was the winner with only 8 players finishing with a par round or better over the two days.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes John Samuels did have a big pay day – 2025 Champion, Best Over 55\u2019s and runner-up Gross plus of course the obligatory Nearest the Pin.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pascoe Cup awarded to the winner of the Best Gross was won by Edmund Hall<\/strong> on 152 with John Samuels<\/strong> on 154.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Samuels<\/strong> won the over 55\u2019s with a score of 154. Next was Peter Miller on 163.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course was in great order thanks to Brad and his team. Now it is the start of a busy period for the courses staff with major course renovations being undertaken in early October and of course the Match Play, Winter Cup and Spring Cup coming up over the next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appreciation is extended to the Pro Shop and House staff for their efforts over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
