————————————————————————————-

27.10 40 – 13.07.23

It is with great sadness we advise members of the death of Ron Parkin following a long battle with cancer. He died peacefully in hospital on Thursday 13th of July at the age of 82. Our sympathies are extended to his wife Judith and their three children Brent, Nicola and Lance.

Ron joined Nedlands on the 27th of November 1994. He was previously a member of Albany Golf Club.

GOLFING SNIPPETS

His handicap over the last 20 years hardly moved and fluctuated between 16 and 19.

Surprisingly he won many monthly medals and even more surprising was he won some of them playing in the morning.

He won the Frank Bradshaw Shield in 2005.

A highlight would have been his Hole in One in 2014.

He played for many years in Senior Pennants.

When people played for the first time with Ron, they could not believe their eyes as he putted with one hand while the other rested on his left knee. Every now and again he reverted to conventional 2 handed putting, with disastrous consequences.

He was a member of “THE TABLE” and on occasions it was very difficult to get him away from the regular Wednesday Luncheon and get him onto the course.

He ceased playing competitively in November 2022.

COMMITTEE and VOLUNTEERING

Ron was dedicated to the club and volunteered for many years before being elected to the committee as Chairman of Greens in 2008 – taking over from the late Roger Hunt. (They actually shared the same birthday, October 27)

With his background in agronomy and coupling this background with his enthusiasm and dedication he was the ideal man for the role. He stayed in the role until 2012 and in 2013 Bruce Cullam took over. He assumed the role again in 2018 and 2019 before handing the reins over to Peter Boyne.

He continued to volunteer and could often be seen on the course marking Kikuyu Grass ready for spraying.

In 2022 he was recognised for his services by being awarded the Meritorious Service Award.

There are many stories that can be told about the enigmatic Ron Parkin and no doubt some of those will come out on Wednesday evening after presentations when his great friend Joe Alexander will provide a Eulogy.

Some comments received from members-;

His presence will be missed around the club, and of course the Table for lunch. His dedication and work around the course and its management would be difficult to replicate in future years.

His humour and smile will be missed. Loved by all. One of the good guys.

His undying enthusiasm and love of golf and Nedlands Golf Club was phenomenal.  He will be sadly missed by all of us.

He was always entertaining, and he fought his battles with great strength and without complaint.

Details of the funeral will follow when known.
