It has been said that the eye of the hurricane is the calmest place of the storm. How true then, that in the middle of this COVID-19 crisis, we are able to seek refuge in the golf club and enjoy the peaceful surroundings that it offers, whilst all around us, businesses are closing, schools are being shut, borders are getting closed and travel restrictions are being applied even within our state. Welcome to the new normal that is life under COVID-19.

But for all of us to continue to enjoy this tranquility, we need to continue to abide by the strict rules and precautions that are in place and on that note, I would like to thank the membership for abiding by them. We are constantly being scrutinized so please continue to do the right thing.

However, the main reason for my writing to the membership is to acknowledge the efforts of Ronald Parkin, and his contribution to this golf club. Ron has been Course Director twice. The first time, from 2008 to 2013 and recently from 2018 to the present. His knowledge of all things related to the course is second to none. It’s almost like he knows every tree personally and sometimes, I wonder if that even extends to every blade of grass! Such is his reputation that other golf clubs have sought his advice from time to time. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and Ron has tendered his resignation to the committee. His last job as Course Director was to find his replacement and I am grateful that he has found an excellent successor in Peter Boyne, which the committee has unanimously endorsed.

On a personal note, I will always treasure my in depth conversations with Ron. Ron has always been supportive of me and my ideas, and I am grateful to Ron for his loyalty and advice during some of the more difficult and turbulent times. Ron was no pushover on the committee, but was always understanding of the big picture. He was always measured and objective when it came to important decisions. Ron, thank you for being my eye of the hurricane and thank you for all that you have done and will continue to do for the club.
