NEW CHAMPIONS CROWNED IN 2021 ALLOM BOWL

CAROLYN BROWNE and MACKENZIE BUCK WIN MIXED FOURSOME CHAMPIONSHIP

A perfect sunny Autumn day greeted twenty seven pairs of players on Sunday May 2nd to contest the Forty Second playing of the O and S ALLOM BOWL, the club’s Mixed Foursome Championship, with the winning pair having the best Gross Score over 18 Holes. As a Championship it is one of the major events on the mixed calendar and a well sought after title.

The Bowl was presented to the club in 1970 by OG and STELLA ALLOM who were founding members of the club and Life Members. The Perpetual Trophy was presented to the club in recognition of nearly 40 years of enjoyable membership.

This year’s event was sponsored by HOSECO, courtesy of popular members JOHN and GABI HOLT, and we are most grateful for their generous support of this year’s event.

Along with the defending champions, Chris and Stewart Wharton, former champions in the field included Cath Bellemore and Paul Baster who had won the Bowl ten times since 2003. Gavin Furness and current Ladies Club Champion, Ali Baker had both won on previous occasions but with different partners, Gavin with daughter Grace (three times) and Ali with former member Paul Skipworth.

There were several other pairings seen to have a good chance and deny the Bellemore/Baster combination an eleventh title and the defending Champions back to back titles.

The defending Champions did not have a good day (94)and were unsuccessful in their quest to defend their title.

So could the ten time champions make it eleven? Or could we see the emergence of new champions?

It was a very closeley run affair. Some of the more fancied couples failed in their quest and will have to wait another year for their chance.

At the end of the day there were three couples who looked like they could win over the concluding stages – Cath Bellemore and Paul Baster, Carolyn Browne and Mackenzie Buck and Rhonda Moore and Richard Clarke.

The final three holes were most telling with –

  • Cath and Paul finishing fast with 3 Pars.

  • Rhonda and Richard after working hard all day had 2 Double Bogeys in their last 3 holes.

  • Carolyn and Mackenzie tried very hard to hand the title to the 10 time champions finishing with 3 Bogeys but they managed to hold on and win by one shot.

So 2021 saw new champions crowned with the very popular Ladies Captain Carolyn Browne and former staff member Mackenzie Buck (84) winning the 2021 O and S Allom Bowl with a score of 84. Close up were Cath Bellemore and Paul Baster with 85 with Rhonda Moore and Richard Clarke a further 3 shots back.

In addition to the Gross Event the Nett event was very competitively contested  amongst the 27 pairs and with Carolyn and Mackenzie already crowned the champions the nett winners were Rhonda Moore and Richard Clarke on a count back from Krystyna Knottnerus and Tony Cowan with scores of 73.5. A further three couples were 2 shots further back.

Special thanks to the sponsors of the day HOSECO (John and Gabi Holt) and to the course staff, house staff and pro shop staff for their contribution to a successful and enjoyable day on Sunday.

Finally congratulations to our new champions – Carolyn Browne and Mackenzie Buck, and we look forward to 2022 when they, no doubt, will attempt to  successfully defend their title.
