RELEGATION NOT AN OPTION FOR A TEAM OF FIGHTERS

DIVISION TWO

A home game against ROYAL PERTH was the final game of the year and it was a must win game if the team was to remain in Division 2 for 2022 – and at the same time hope Sea View could not topple Hartfield. So there was a lot at stake for the team who had not won since their first round encounter with The Vines.

A beautiful warm morning greeted the players at 7.30 and with the greens running at 12 on the stimpmeter, Nedlands players were quick to assert their authority with Aidan Cooper, Callum White and Riley Gott jumping out of the blocks and leading after 5 holes. Unfortunately, Aidan and Callum could not carry their initial momentum to the final nine and lost to their seasoned opponents. Riley played extremely well for most of the day and was never headed running out a 3 and 2 winner. Harry Traylen struck form at the right time and made it 2 games all, with a convincing 4/3 win. Captain and former club champion Ben Cullinan also struck form and made it 3 matches to 2.

With Edmund Hall down in his match against the 6th ranked WA Player Connor Fewkes and Tristan Geerlings all square with the 5th ranked WA Player Jordan Jung it was going to be a close-run affair.

Edmund won the 15th to get his match back to 1 down, halved the 16th but lost the 17th to succumb to his highly credentialled opponent 2/1 – a creditable performance.

With the news that Hartfield had defeated Sea View, the destiny of the team for 2022 rested in the capable hands of the Club Champion, Tristan Geerling.

Tristan went 1 up after the 15th but handed his lead straight back at the 16th hole, so now it was 3 matches all and one in the balance.

Tristan took the lead on the 17th hole and with his Royal Perth opponent making a meal of the final hole Tristan played conservatively, playing his approach shot just left of the green, hitting a nice chip and ultimately winning the hole

So it was celebrations for Nedlands as they achieved their goal of staying in Division 2 for 2022 with a memorable 4/3 victory.

A few acknowledgments-;

  1. Thanks to the members for their support on Sunday. It was great to see a few familiar faces, especially on the closing holes.
  2. The Course Staff are to be congratulated on their presentation of the course. The condition of the course met with positive comments from members of the other seven teams who played on the day-
  3. Thanks to the Sponsors of the Pennant Teams this year COOPER and LOURIE
  4. Special acknowledgement is made on behalf of all pennant players of the work and support of Pennant Coordinator Marty Morris – both in the pre-season lead up and the season itself. It really is a thankless job and he deserves praise from both teams for a job well done

Editor’s Note – Congratulations to the Team for staying in Division 2 – Having picked them to win this year I will never make preseason predictions again.

DIVISION FIVE

WA GOLF CLUB was the venue for the final match of the season and ROYAL PERTH were the opposition.

Whilst not being able to make the finals a victory would see the team jump ahead of Royal Perth in the final standings, which would be a good finish to the year.

The results show a commanding victory to the first-year team with convincing wins to Ufaq Qazi, for the second week in a row, and James Morris and Dave Southam. Tim Tan had a hard fought half and David Rees continued in winning form. To his credit Rehan Alikhan bounced back a loss in his first representative match recording a hard fought victory. John Venner unfortunately lost on the final hole.

And so it was a convincing win to finish the season in style wining 5.5 to 1.5 and placing the team 5th in the overall standings.

This was the first year Nedlands had placed a second team in Pennants and the team, led by Scott van Heurck, acquitted themselves extremely well. Hopefully they will all learn from the experience and improve on their standing in 2022.

For the record fifteen players played in the Division 5 team over the seven rounds – ten of whom had not represented the club previously.

Congratulations to all players.
