Men’s Foursomes Championship Open to 5, 6 and 7 Day Members

12:30 PM Shotgun, Sunday 27 June.

The men’s Foursomes Championship, sponsored by Past-president Ian Macdonald, will be played on Sunday 27 June and the event is open to male members with 18 hole playing rights.

We are playing the event on a Sunday to bring a focus to this very traditional, and challenging, form of the game – alternate shot golf with your partner.

Foursomes appeared in golf pictures and records by the 18th century, but there is no information to explain how or why it came about. Speculation is that it was played because it is quicker, as the partner can move ahead and be ready to play, and in winter this is convenient and enjoyable. The format remains very popular in the UK and has endured at the highest level with foursomes being played in the Ryder Cup since 1927 and the President’s Cup since 1994.

Within the NGC Foursomes Championship there will be two trophies on offer. The RL Newman Tray, first played in 1969, is the NGC foursomes best gross trophy and the Nedlands Foursomes Championship tray, first played in 2013, is the NGC foursomes best net trophy.

This event was not played in 2020 due to COVID and the 2019 defending champions are:

  • RL Newman Tray – Gary Hing and Steve Noske

  • Nedlands Foursomes Championship – Shane Maloney and David Southam

The event will be played in groups of 3 pairs (i.e. 3 balls in play) with a 12:30 PM shotgun start.

So, find yourself a partner, practice not saying “sorry” and come and have a go.

The tee sheet will open for bookings on Sunday 13 June at 11:00 AM.
