The most prestigious event on the Men’s Calendar, THE CG DUDLEY CUP, will be played over 36 Holes of Stroke Play on the weekend of October 2 and October 3 and will once again be sponsored by MORGAN STANLEY. Our appreciation is extended to members Stuart Beattie and Mark Palmer for their continued support of the club.

2021 marks the 71st playing of “THE DUDLEY”, and will see a full field of 116 players trying to have their name engraved alongside previous winners.

So, in the lead up to the Dudley it would be appropriate to provide a little further background of our founding President -;

CYRIL DUDLEY President for 27 years (1932-1950 and 1955-1962)

  • In 1933 he was made a Life Member and in 1963 “President Emeritus” which literally means “one who has retired with honour”.

  • In 1975 he was awarded a C.B.E.by the Queen for services to Real Estate, Sport, Politics and Community Service.

  • Family

  • His wife Pam was a Founding Member and Life Member.

  • Tom Dudley, one of his six children, was a member of the first winning “A” Grade Pennant team in 1960. Son John was also a member and handy golfer.

  • Cyril himself played on a handicap as low as 6 and was a member of a winning “B” Grade team.

  • His daughter, Anne, married Herb Elliott in 1959.

  • Some of Cyril’s other achievements

  • President of WA Golf Association

  • President of Subiaco Football Club

  • President of the Real Estate Institute – both the state and national bodies

  • Life Member Real Estate Institute of Australia

  • Involved in organizational committee for the 1962 Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games)

THE 2021 DUDLEY

  • At the time of writing there is one player in the 2021 field trying to win The Dudley for the third time and seven others attempting to claim a second victory-;

David Falconer 1976 and 2003, Andrew Everett 2007, Grant Macdonald 2008, Timothy Tan 2009, Terrance Tan 2011, Reegan Cake 2014, Brian Stuart 2017 and the defending Champion, Campbell Thompson, who is confident he can make it back-to-back Cups.

  • The Pascoe Cup, named after the Club’s first Captain, is awarded to the player with the Best Gross Score over the two rounds. The 2020 winner Tristan Geerlings will be looking to go back-to-back this weekend but will have some stiff opposition from the likes of Ben CullinanEdmund Hall, Anthony Joseph, James Morris and Riley Gott, with Aidan Cooper, Ajay Dhadli, Dave Southam, Callum White and Stewart Wharton not without a chance.

  • The over 55’s Trophy is awarded to the player (over 55) with the Best Gross Score over the two rounds. David Falconer made it a hat trick in 2020 and will again be the man to beat. Others to watch out for are the 2020 runner up, Stuart Waters, Gavin Hing (who is in excellent form of late), Steve Noske, John Samuels and Stewart Wharton.

  • Louis De Verteuil the popular 2015 Champion and great club man has retired from the Dudley. The record he established will long be remembered – oldest person to win Dudley at the age of 88 years “young”!

  • Whilst it has been said many times before it is worth repeating about the CURSE OF THE DUDLEY. Each year every player thinks or believes they are going to win, only to one-by-one fall out of contention – some as early as the first hole, some, after leading the first round fall by the wayside early in the second round and some leave it to the penultimate and/or the final hole.

Cyril Dudley’s name was often mention in a disparaging way and no doubt 2021 will be no different.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

The CG Dudley is the forerunner to the Club Championships and this year the Match Committee has-;

  • Set aside 3 Sundays and one Saturday morning to play the matches in the various grades – dates and times on Club Website.

  • Increased the number of qualifiers in “A” Grade and “B” Grade from 8 to 16 with “C” Grade remaining at 8 qualifiers – this is the same as it was for many years and gives more members the opportunity to play Match Play.

  • Established the Grades based on the field size and qualifying numbers-;

“A” Grade        0-12

“B” Grade       13-19

“C” Grade       20-36

  • For the first time in the Club’s history, we believe, scheduled the Finals of both the Men’s and Women’s Club Championships be played on the same day – SUNDAY OCTOBER 24. This will hopefully create a day all members will support, enjoy and be part of the festivities of the day and evening.

Finally best wish to all players in their quest for victory and their endeavours to qualify for the Club Championships.

“May the Curse of the Dudley NOT be with you.”
