The past long weekend Nedlands Golf Club was host to the annual Nedlands Junior Masters sponsored by Srixon Golf (Carl Evans), APC Group (Ian & Grant MacDonald), Retravision Cannington (Nino D’Ulisse), IGA Captain Stirling (Tony and Blair Morgan), Perth Stitching (Ken Douglas), Golf Box (Mike Glover), Coca Cola Amatil
This is a long standing event that features some of the best junior golfers from across the state who all look forward to the chance to play our course and make their claim to the trophy.
This year the Nedlands Junior Masters was run immaculately and this is a testament to the range of members that volunteered and the tournament organisers. A big thank you to the match committee of Cedric Bell, Greg Fitzhardinge and Marty Morris who all put numerous hours of hard work into making sure the event ran smoothly. As always, the captains and ex-captains of Nedlands Golf Club are very generous with their time and thanks must go to Gavin Furness, Joe Alexander, Marg Doyle and Carolyn Browne for their efforts across the 2 days in running the sausage sizzle, officiating and maintaining the leaderboard for the spectators. Also a big thank you to Brady Morris and Hugo Morris for their work on the day organising players onto the tee.
There was an army of volunteer members brilliantly organised by Gordon and Susie Rich and a big thank you Gordon and Susie and to all who volunteered part of their long weekend to help out spotting balls and ensuring the safety of players and spectators alike. They will be listed later in the article.
The format of the Nedlands Junior Masters is 36 holes of stroke and there are separate divisions for age, gender and both gross and nett prizes. This year’s event was particularly memorable as it featured a very close finish as both overall winners for the gross males and females came down to one stroke.
After a fine bogey-free round of 69 (5 under) on the first day, Maddison Hinson-Tolchard overcame a strong challenge by Yeah Jin-Lee (76,73) on the second day to become the Girls Open Winner with a score of 148 (69,79). Well done to Maddison for becoming the Girl’s Junior Masters Champion for 2019. In her speech Maddison thanked the tournament directors, Nedlands golf club and the greens staff for their hard work in organising a fine tournament on one of the best condition golf courses she has played on recently.
In a strong field of junior boy golfers, there were a few contenders after the first day’s play, most notably the runner up from last year’s Junior Masters – Jordan Jung who posted a strong score of 68 (4 under). Other good gross scores included Aaron Hall (71), Josiah Gilbert (73), Carter Mealing (74) and Aldrich Potgieter (74). On the beginning of the final day of play on Monday, it was clear that Jordan Jung had the opportunity to follow up his efforts last year and make a push for the trophy. Despite a less than ideal start with a double bogey on the 2nd hole of his final round, Jordan recovered to post a 75 which was enough to hold off a late charge from Aldrich Potgeiter who shot a 70 on the final day (144). Jordans 68 and 75 made for 143 across both days, which was enough be crowned the Boy’s Junior Masters Champion for 2019.
Other highlights included a hole in one on Monday by Ian Pienaar on the 12th hole and a near albatross (tap-in eagle!) by Amanda Gan on the 6th hole on Sunday. Nedlands golf club was also represented fantastically by young junior member Riley Gott who played exceptional golf on both days to become the winner of the Boys Under 14 Category with a total score of 156 (80,76).
