The Cam Wilson Bowl was inaugurated in 1991 and was named after former Captain, President, Historian and Life Member Cam Wilson. The Cup was a forerunner to the CG Dudley Cup and Club Championships. Prior to 1991 only Full Members were eligible to play in the CG Dudley so the committee of the day decided to include a number of Provisional Members in the field and these positions came from the results of the Cam Wilson Bowl.

Around 2000 this changed, but the Bowl maintained its prestige and is still played as a forerunner to the CG Dudley with the winner being able to reserve a group of four players in the CG Dudley Cup.

2021 celebrated the 31st playing of the event and the following Past Winners were in the field – Mal Skipworth (1999), Angus Johnson (2010), Ray Badnall (2013), Colin Yoong (2014), Stewart Wharton (2015), Scott Van Heurck (2017), Grant Evans (2019) and defending champion Vince Caruso. There had not been a Multiple Winner.

Longstanding members Tony Slee (45 years) and Ron Birmingham (41 years) continued their support of this year’s Bowl and once again we acknowledge their contribution to the success of the day. Invited to join their playing group were former members Phil McPhail (a past Club Champion) and Greg Parker (a past Minor Club Champion).

This year 103 players played on Saturday the 18th of September in perfect weather conditions and teeing off first in the morning was the 2014 winner Colin Yoong who set the pace and gave the rest of the field something to chase – with 40 points from his 10 handicap. Three Birdies helped his score along with a further 3 pluses.

So after the morning field had finished Colin led by 1 point from Andrew Roberts whose card revealed 9 pluses. An unfortunate wipe on his final hole would turn out to cost him dearly. One point further adrift was Phil Sedgman.

The afternoon players set out in very similar conditions to their morning counterparts to chase the leader – but at the end of the day nobody really threatened – with only 4 players having 37 points. Reciprocal member Oddbjorn Gjerde from Dunsborough Lakes was the best on a count back from 3 others. Oddbjorn won “A” Grade, playing off his 7 handicap, and gave his 10 vouchers to his playing partner, Barry Markey – a fine gesture, but why one will never know!

So the 2014 winner, Colin Yoong becomes the first player to win the Cam Wilson Bowl twice. Congratulations Colin and we have now had 2 two-time champions in the last week.

Andrew Roberts ran second and Phil Sedgman third. Phil McPhail, Wayne Ovens, Tristan Geerlings, Ajay Dhadli, Matt Dumble along with Oddbjorn Gjerde were next on 37 points.

With the generosity of the sponsors a further distribution of golf balls was made to some of those in attendance at presentations.

Tristan Geerlings, warming up for the Club Championships, had an excellent round of 70 to take out the best gross and Tony Slee was the best of the other former winners with 34 points.

Finally, thanks to our sponsors of the day Tony Slee and Ron Birmingham, the staff and the 103 players who made the day a success.
